BCN, 14 Oct 2021.- The Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG) has obtained the Oxford Nanopore Technologies service provider certification on the PromethION device. The Oxford Nanopore service provider certification program ensures that certified labs offer the highest quality service on sequencing platforms. The PromethION certified provider adds to previous certification awarded to CNAG on the GridION device for DNA and RNA sequencing services.

The PromethION 24 available at CNAG can operate up to 24 flow cells in parallel, each with approximately six times the sequencing capacity of a MinION flow cell. It combines short to ultra-long reads with high sequence output for the production of contiguous, high-quality reference genomes. The PromethION sequences DNA and RNA directly with no amplification bias and retains modification information. The read lengths are determined by the sample and the experiments’ requirements so there is no need to fragment the sample, making assembly, structural variation detection, and phasing easier. Additionally, the system uses MinKNOW to provide real-time feedback on an experiment’s progression through histograms, alignment graphs, channel state plots and more.

The PromethION 24 is the latest incorporation to the fleet of state-of-the-art sequencers at the CNAG. The entire sequencing operation at the centre is tracked using an in house developed Laboratory Information Management System and is backed by a High-Performance Computer with 3,500 cores and 7.5 Petabytes of data storage.

The CNAG is a pioneer in quality management in the European public genomic research sector and its processes are in compliance with ISO 9001:2015 certification and ISO 17025:2017 accreditation and since 2019 belongs to BBMRI-ERIC Expert Centres.
